The Gibson Desert, Northern Territory

Pure red sand dunes are protected by hop bushes and give way to a spinifex swale that extends easterly at Cordillo Downs in South Australia.

The presiding storms will pass without helping the dry landscape and the barren river bed that spills out on the swales between the dunes.

The spinifex may separate individual dunes by several kilometres in a landscape renowned for being inhospitable.
