Sugar Creek, New South Wales

A dead forest giant hollowed by an ancient fire is now surrounded by a rainforest of cabbage palms and coachwood.

Rainforest can only exist where fire is excluded. The older eucalypt forest may never return and the original flooded gum stand will then be lost.

In February 2001, I returned to Sugar Creek to find the giant had fallen, so all that remains is this image of what once was.
